Virginia Tech - ISU / Smithsonian Tap NewCom for Streaming Video Cast of Inka Engineering Expedition

Virginia Tech and Iowa State University, working in conjunction with The Smithsonian, are preparing for an "Inka Engineering" summer expedition in the remote, treacherous mountain terrain of Peru. And NewCom has been tapped to provide satellite services and facilitate streaming video cast for the trip.

A research team of archeologists, anthropologists and engineers will help students explore how ancient Inka engineers handled hydraulic issues, geotechnical issues and overall construction of the road. Along the way, the team will conduct live video casts using a laptop computer, an antenna and a modem that connects them to the Smithsonian via NewCom's satellite and video conferencing services. The video casts will stream live into the Smithsonian auditorium and be projected on a large screen so museum visitors can experience the expedition.

To prepare for the July trip, NewCom has undergone several comprehensive tests with both institutions to ensure the project's success. A team is also undergoing training at NewCom's facilities to understand how to activate the service while on the expedition.

"They will literally be following in the footsteps of the Inkas," notes Jaime Munera, Director of Product Development and IT for NewCom. "The road is very wild and rough in places and they will be having llamas carrying the equipment that they will be setting up along the way. It's a very exciting project and we are honored to be a part of it."
